Stenka Razin's Cliff |
There is a cliff on the Volga, overgrown with wild moss From the summit to the very edge [of the river] And it has stood for hundreds of years, dressed only in moss Knowing neither needs nor worries Nothing grows on its summit But the free wind goes wild And a mighty eagle set up its nest there And tears its prey to pieces on it Just one of the people was on that cliff Just one reached the top And the cliff did not forget that man And since those times it has been called by his name And although every year throughout the churches in Russia They curse that man The Volga people sing songs about him And remember him with respect Since, sometimes at night, on returning home He climbed that cliff alone And in the midnight darkness he stayed There on a high rock all night until dawn Many thoughts hatched in his head Many thoughts he reconsidered that night. And to the waves' murmur, in the nocturnal silence He came up with a great venture But he did not get to accomplish what he wanted And that was not the fate that befell him. And with a harsh reprisal and with a bloody hand He did not bring relief to the people's grief He was not brought to Moscow as a ruler Not welcomed like an honoured guest And unlike a military leader, on a horse and with a sword He put down his impetuous bones… And Stepan, as if he knew, told no one He communicated his thoughts to no one He entrusted those thoughts to just That cliff alone, where he was, to safeguard And to this day that cliff stands and keeps All Stepan's intimate thoughts. And, just with the Volga alone, it sometimes recalls The ataman's swashbuckling life But then, if there is at least one in Russia Who was not associated with worldly greed Who loved freedom like his dear mother And fought in its name - Let that one go bravely, he will go up that cliff He will press a sensitive ear against the summit And the giant cliff will relate All that Stepan was thinking to that daredevil |
